The map

Árta sits in Epirus, in north-western Greece, on a pronounced bend of the Arachthos River. The old town occupies the land inside that curve, so on a map the river nearly encircles it. Streets climb and turn in a dense, irregular pattern that dates from centuries of continuous settlement, while newer quarters spread out along the roads beyond.
The town stands on the site of ancient Ambracia and later served as the capital of the medieval Despotate of Epirus. Its Byzantine churches, including the Panagia Parigoritissa, and the castle on the riverbank recall that period.
