Mining cités
Company-built housing estates appear as tidy, repeating rows of small plots and parallel streets, one of the most recognisable patterns of the northern French coal basin.

The map
Avion Map Poster & Print
Avion is a town in the former coal-mining basin of northern France, directly south of Lens in the Pas-de-Calais. Its map is shaped by that industrial past: neat, repeating blocks of workers' housing built by the mining companies sit alongside older village streets, and the town merges into its neighbours with little open ground between them.
Mining transformed the landscape of the whole region, and the traces are still visible from above in rail alignments, former pit sites turned into parks, and the regular geometry of the housing estates known as cités. The mining basin of Nord-Pas-de-Calais is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage cultural landscape.
An Avion map poster brings out the repetition and rhythm of that planned housing, contrasted with the looser roads that predate it. It is an honest portrait of a working town, where the pattern of streets still tells the story of how people lived and worked here.

Next to Lens
Avion joins Lens almost without a break, so the map reads as part of a larger urban area stretching across the former mining towns of the Gohelle.
Reused pit sites
Former mining land has in many places become parks and green corridors, shown on the map as open shapes breaking up the dense residential fabric.
