Azare sits in the north of Bauchi State, on the wide, level savanna that stretches across northern Nigeria. From above, the town reads as a dense core of closely packed lanes and compounds. The town is the headquarters of Katagum local government area and the seat of the Katagum Emirate, which gives it a traditional centre alongside its administrative role. It also hosts a Federal Medical Centre that serves a wide surrounding area.
