Tigris meanders
The river loops back on itself several times as it passes through the city, creating curved peninsulas and long waterfronts. It is the dominant shape on any map of Baghdad.

The map
Baghdad Map Poster & Print
Baghdad is defined on the map by the Tigris, which crosses the city in a series of wide loops. The west bank is known as Karkh and the east bank as Rusafa, and a series of bridges links the two. Inside the tightest bends the land forms rounded peninsulas, some given over to palaces, parks and government compounds, others to dense residential streets.
The city was founded in 762 by the Abbasid caliph al-Mansur, who built a circular city on the west bank, remembered as the Round City. Nothing of its walls survives above ground, but Baghdad became one of the great centres of learning of its age. On the east bank, the older commercial streets around Al-Rasheed Street and the book market of Al-Mutanabbi Street keep a dense pattern.
Beyond the historic cores, the city spreads across the flat Mesopotamian plain in broad districts laid out through the twentieth century, including Sadr City to the northeast, with its regular grid. Canals and highways cross the land between them. A Baghdad map poster brings together the river's meanders and these very different grids in one measured composition.

Al-Mutanabbi Street
A short street near the river in old Rusafa, home to Baghdad's historic book market. It sits within a tight network of lanes in one of the older parts of the east bank.
Sadr City grid
A large district in the northeast laid out as a dense, regular grid of small blocks. Its repetitive geometry contrasts clearly with the curving river and the older streets.

Why Baghdad
A map that means something
Baghdad has a long tradition of learning and literature, and many Iraqis abroad keep a strong connection to the neighbourhoods they grew up in, from Adhamiya to Karrada. A map of the river and its districts is a calm way to honour that.
Write a title, add a subtitle with a family name or a date, and edit the coordinates line if you wish. Choose from five styles; Sand suits the river plain, Noir the curve of the Tigris. HD files cost $9, with a free watermarked preview first.
