Rhine bend
The river curves sharply through the city, a wide band of water that splits the map into Grossbasel and Kleinbasel and gives the composition its sweeping shape.

The map
Basel Map Poster
Basel is built where the Rhine turns sharply north, leaving the Alps behind on its way to the North Sea. The river divides the city into Grossbasel on the higher southern bank and Kleinbasel on the flatter northern side, and on a map this bend is the defining gesture: a broad curve of water with the old town gathered above it.
Grossbasel climbs to the red sandstone Münster on its terrace above the river, surrounded by lanes and squares that have kept their medieval pattern. Several bridges cross the Rhine, including the Mittlere Brücke at one of the oldest crossing points, while small cable ferries move between the banks using only the current. In summer, swimmers float downstream past the old town.
Basel is also where three countries meet, with the Dreiländereck marker standing in the Rhine harbour, and the University of Basel, founded in 1460, is the oldest in Switzerland. A Basel map poster captures all of this in one frame: the river, the old town, the bridges, the rail yards and the borders running just beyond the city's edge.

Old town terrace
Grossbasel's historic centre rises on a terrace above the south bank, a dense tangle of medieval lanes around the Münster and the market squares below it.
Three borders
At the northern edge the city meets France and Germany, and the map runs continuously across the frontiers, with streets, rail lines and the harbour crossing from one country into the next.

Why Basel
A map that means something
Basel draws people for art, science and the river, and many arrive for a few years of work before moving on. A map of the city marks that time, from the apartment in Kleinbasel to the swim down the Rhine, in a form that suits any interior.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line, perhaps with your neighbourhood or the year you arrived. Choose from Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand; download HD files for $9 or order a printed poster on matte paper, framed or unframed.
