The map

Batu lies in a high valley in East Java, surrounded by volcanic mountains including Arjuno and Panderman. On a map the town is compact at its centre, around the square and the main streets, then spreads unevenly along roads that follow the slopes. Separated from Malang Regency as a city in its own right in 2001, Batu is known across Indonesia for its cool climate, apple orchards and theme parks. The surrounding hills also hold hot springs and waterfalls, part of what made the area a mountain retreat since the colonial period.
