Open-pit mine
The lignite pit south of town is a vast terraced cavity, so large that at a wider zoom it becomes the most dramatic shape on the map.

The map
Bełchatów Map Poster & Print
Bełchatów is a town in central Poland whose modern shape comes largely from the lignite industry. From the 1970s it grew rapidly to house workers for the nearby mine and power station, and the map shows it: large blocks of housing estates arranged around green spaces, broad roads between them, and a smaller older centre at the heart.
The most striking feature lies just outside the town. The open-pit lignite mine to the south is enormous, a vast excavated area that, from above, is larger than the town itself. Next to it stands the Bełchatów Power Station, one of the largest coal-fired plants in Europe. On a wider map these industrial landscapes dominate the frame.
A Bełchatów map poster can be framed tightly on the town's estates and parks or pulled back to show the mine beside it. The town is also well known in sport, as home to the volleyball club Skra Bełchatów, and many visitors know it first from the arena.

Housing estates
Blocks of flats set around courtyards and greenery make up much of the town, forming a distinctive, repeated modernist pattern from above.
Old town core
A smaller, older centre with a tighter street pattern predates the industrial boom and anchors the more recent districts around it.
