The map
Berchem Map Poster & Print
Berchem is a district of Antwerp in Flanders, lying south-east of the historic centre, just outside the ring road that circles the inner city. It was once a separate municipality and became part of Antwerp in 1983. Berchem station, an important rail hub on the line to Brussels, is one of its main landmarks.
On a map, Berchem is dense and varied. Terraced streets fill most of the district in a tight irregular grid, crossed by railway lines that run through on embankments. Along its border with the neighbouring district of Borgerhout lies part of Zurenborg, known for its streets of Art Nouveau and eclectic townhouses, including the Cogels-Osylei.
A Berchem map poster captures an urban district shaped by the railway and nineteenth-century growth. The tracks cut long straight lines through the blocks, the ring road marks the boundary with the inner city, and the pattern of streets shows the density of a district where people live close together. It is a detailed portrait of a lived-in part of Antwerp.
