Teutoburg Forest ridge
A continuous band of woodland crosses the city from north-west to south-east, dividing the districts and giving the whole map a strong diagonal line.

The map
Bielefeld Map Poster & Print
Seen from above, Bielefeld is shaped by the Teutoburg Forest, a long wooded ridge that runs diagonally through the city. Most of the city lies on the north-eastern side of it, where the streets fan out from a compact old town. The ridge has a gap in it, and the roads and railway squeeze through that pass, so the city's main transport lines are easy to pick out on the map.
The old town is a tight cluster of irregular lanes at the foot of the ridge. Just above it stands Sparrenburg castle on a hilltop, and a green strip of forest reaches almost into the centre. Further out, ring roads and residential districts spread across gentle farmland, and the large university campus sits on the northern side, a clear block of built space among the fields.
A Bielefeld map poster shows the contrast between the ridge's dark strip of forest and the fine web of streets beside it. The city is home to Dr. Oetker's headquarters and to a long-running German internet joke that Bielefeld does not really exist. The map settles the question calmly, with every street, park and rail line drawn in place.

Sparrenburg castle hill
The medieval castle sits on a spur of the ridge directly above the old town, where the forest edge meets the densest part of the street plan.
The Bielefeld pass
Roads and railway run through a natural gap in the ridge, one of the most readable features on the map and the reason the city grew where it did.

A map that means something
