Planned avenue grid
Broad avenues cross at right angles through the centre and divide the city into large, even blocks. On paper they print as a crisp geometric pattern with plenty of white space.

The map
Bole Map Poster & Print
Bole, also called Bortala, is the seat of the Bortala Mongol Autonomous Prefecture in northwestern Xinjiang. Seen from above, it is a compact and carefully planned city, with wide avenues crossing at right angles, large blocks and generous green strips. Around it the Bortala River valley opens into irrigated farmland. Beyond the farmland lie dry plains and the rising foothills of the Tian Shan ranges.
The city lies not far from the border with Kazakhstan, and the nearby Alashankou crossing links China with rail routes into Central Asia. Sayram Lake, a high alpine lake known for its clear blue water, lies within the same prefecture. To the east the saline Ebinur Lake marks the low point of the basin. The region is home to Mongol, Kazakh, Uyghur and Han communities.
A Bole map poster works well because of that order. The regular blocks form a strong geometric pattern, broken by the river corridor and by roads heading out towards the lakes and the border. Printed in a single ink, the city becomes a clean diagram of a frontier town on the old routes between China and Central Asia, with plenty of open space around it.

Bortala River valley
The river runs past the city through a valley of irrigated fields. Its soft, winding line contrasts with the straight streets of the urban grid beside it.
Roads to lake and border
Highways leave the city towards Sayram Lake in the mountains and the Alashankou border crossing. They form long straight strokes that run across the open plain to the edges of the frame.

Why Bole
A map that means something
A map of Bole speaks to people who grew up in Bortala, to travellers who crossed Xinjiang by rail and to anyone drawn to the geometry of planned cities. Its ordered grid is calm and graphic, and it holds its own on a plain wall.
Add a title in your own wording, a subtitle and the coordinates line, then choose one of five styles. Blueprint brings out the grid, and Sand gives it the warm tone of the surrounding steppe. Try the free 900 px watermarked preview before buying the $9 HD files.
