Bonny stands on Bonny Island in Rivers State, in the southern part of the Niger Delta, where the Bonny River meets the Atlantic Ocean. The Kingdom of Bonny was one of the most important ports on the West African coast for centuries, and in the modern era the island has become central to Nigeria's energy industry, with an oil export terminal and the Nigeria LNG plant located here.
