It is the most populous town of the Marajó archipelago, and its map is shaped by water rather than roads: the town faces a river channel, and much of the surrounding area is forest and floodplain crossed by waterways.
The Breves straits, a maze of narrow channels, carry river traffic between Belém and the main course of the Amazon, so boats rather than highways connect the town to the rest of the region.
