Unlike many Leyte towns, it lies inland rather than on the coast, on the plain between the eastern shore and the mountains of the island's interior. Burauen has a place in Second World War history. During the Battle of Leyte in 1944, airstrips in the Burauen area were a focus of fighting, including a Japanese airborne attack on American-held airfields. The volcanic uplands to the west include a protected natural park with lakes and hot springs.
