The map
Cento Map Poster & Print
Cento lies in the province of Ferrara in Emilia-Romagna, on the flat plain between Bologna and Ferrara, close to the Reno river. From above, the historic centre is a dense, roughly rectangular core with streets lined by arcades, surrounded by avenues that follow the line of its old defences, and beyond them, newer neighbourhoods and farmland.
Cento is known as the birthplace of the Baroque painter Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, called Guercino, whose works are associated with the town. It is also known for its Carnival, one of the largest in Italy, twinned with the Carnival of Rio de Janeiro. In 2012, earthquakes in Emilia damaged several historic buildings in the town.
A Cento map poster shows the compact old town clearly, framed by its ring of avenues, with roads leading out across the plain and the Reno nearby. The dense centre and the open fields around it create a balanced composition, well suited to black and white.
