Straight roads and irrigation channels divide it into long rectangular fields, and compact village clusters sit at regular intervals among them, with a denser settlement where the main roads meet.
The plain has been farmed intensively for a very long time, and the map shows how carefully the land has been organised. Channels run parallel to the roads.
