Central grid
Straight streets cross at right angles across the centre. They form a disciplined pattern of small blocks around the main plaza and the state government buildings.

The map
Ciudad Victoria Map Poster & Print
Ciudad Victoria, the capital of Tamaulipas, lies where the plains of north-eastern Mexico meet the first ridges of the Sierra Madre Oriental. The mountains rise directly to the west, and the city spreads east from their base in a broad, regular grid. The San Marcos River crosses the urban area in a winding line that breaks the otherwise straight pattern of blocks.
The city was founded in 1750 as Villa de Santa María de Aguayo and later renamed after Guadalupe Victoria, the first president of Mexico. The historic centre keeps a traditional plaza and a checkerboard of streets, with public buildings and churches clustered around it. Newer neighbourhoods fill the flatter land toward the east and south.
The Tropic of Cancer passes a short distance south of the city, which places Victoria right at the edge of the tropics. A Ciudad Victoria map poster shows the discipline of the grid against the rising slopes of the sierra. It is a clear image of a city defined by the meeting of plain and mountain.

San Marcos River
The river cuts across the urban area in gentle curves, with green space along parts of its banks. It is the one natural line that breaks the regular street pattern.
Sierra edge
To the west, the Sierra Madre Oriental rises steeply. The map shows the streets ending abruptly at the foot of the slopes.
