Mosque precinct
The Great Mosque associated with Amadou Bamba is the reference point of the town, and the surrounding streets settle into an orderly pattern around it.

The map
Diourbel Map Poster & Print
Diourbel lies in the heart of Senegal's groundnut basin, about 150 kilometres east of Dakar. On the map it is a compact town with fairly regular streets laid across very flat land. Beyond the last houses, tracks and field boundaries run out over a dry, open plain, and there is no coast or major river to break the pattern.
The town is closely linked to Cheikh Amadou Bamba, founder of the Mouride brotherhood, who lived here under French colonial surveillance in the early twentieth century. The Great Mosque of Diourbel, which he began, is still the spiritual landmark of the town. The holy city of Touba lies not far to the east.
A Diourbel map poster gives you a quiet, even street pattern, with roads leading out towards neighbouring towns and the railway alignment that once carried groundnuts to the coast. It is a restrained image of a place whose importance comes more from faith and farming than from size.

Groundnut plain
Past the edge of town, the flat Sahelian land of the groundnut basin opens out and is crossed only by roads and field tracks.
Routes outward
Main roads leave town towards Dakar, Touba and the surrounding region, and they draw clean lines across an otherwise empty background.

Why Diourbel
A map that means something
Diourbel matters to Mouride families across Senegal and to its diaspora abroad. A map of its streets makes a respectful keepsake, a way to keep a sense of the place on the wall in Paris, New York or Dakar.
You can add a title, subtitle and coordinates, perhaps a family name or a year that means something to you, and choose Classic black and white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand to suit the room.
