Douarnenez faces a broad, sheltered bay on the western coast of Brittany, and the sea shapes almost every line on its map. For generations Douarnenez was one of France's great sardine ports, with canneries lining its waterfront. That industrial past gave the town its dense quays and working harbour. The bay is also linked to the legend of Ys, the drowned city of Breton folklore. Today Port-Rhu houses a maritime museum with historic boats moored along the estuary.
