El Masnou sits on the Maresme coast just north-east of Barcelona, and from above it reads as a series of parallel bands. The shoreline comes first, then the railway, then the coast road, and behind them a tighter grid of streets climbing toward wooded slopes. Every layer follows the direction of the sea, so the whole town looks stretched along one line.
The railway along the shore belongs to the line between Barcelona and Mataró, which opened in 1848 as the first railway on the Spanish mainland. The track still separates the town from its beaches.
