The map
Filadelfia Map Poster & Print
Filadelfia is in the Boquerón Department, in the heart of the Paraguayan Chaco. It was founded around 1930 by Mennonite settlers as the centre of the Fernheim colony. From above, its planning is obvious: a regular grid of straight streets set in a flat landscape of dry forest, pasture and cleared farmland.
The town grew around cooperative institutions, and farming, dairy and cattle ranching still support much of the local economy. Its orderly layout contrasts sharply with the empty land around it, where straight roads and fence lines stretch across the plains toward other colony villages and distant ranches.
