Fnidek lies on Morocco's Mediterranean coast in the far north of the country, just south of the border with the Spanish city of Ceuta. On a map, the town is squeezed between the sea and steep hills. Fnidek was known in the Spanish colonial period as Castillejos. For decades its economy has been tied to the border and cross-border trade. The mountains behind it are part of the landscape that runs across northern Morocco toward the Rif.
