Two-river confluence
The Clearwater joins the Athabasca right beside downtown, and the meeting of their wide channels becomes the natural focal point of the poster.

The map
Fort McMurray Map Poster & Print
Fort McMurray sits in northeastern Alberta where the Clearwater River flows into the Athabasca, and its map is shaped by that confluence. The older downtown lies low in the river valley, while the larger residential areas, such as Thickwood and Timberlea, spread across the higher ground to the west, linked to the centre by a few long roads that climb the escarpment.
The city grew from a fur-trade post into the service centre for the Athabasca oil sands, one of the largest petroleum deposits in the world. Highway 63 runs north through town toward the mining sites. In 2016 a wildfire forced the evacuation of the entire community, and rebuilt streets now sit alongside those that survived.
A Fort McMurray map poster shows a city defined by rivers and forest rather than a single grid. The curving suburban crescents on the plateaus, the valley bottom and the broad sweep of the Athabasca make for a striking composition, framed on every side by boreal land that the map leaves beautifully empty.

Plateau neighbourhoods
Thickwood, Timberlea and other suburbs spread over the uplands in looping crescents and cul-de-sacs, a pattern that contrasts sharply with the tighter streets of the valley below.
Highway 63
The main road threads through the city from south to north, crossing the Athabasca and continuing toward the oil sands operations, a single line that ties the region together.

Why Fort McMurray
A map that means something
Fort McMurray is home to many who arrived for work and stayed, and to others who moved on but still count it as part of their story. After 2016 its map carries extra meaning, as a record of a community that returned and rebuilt.
Personalise the title and subtitle, for instance with your neighbourhood or the year you arrived, and edit the coordinates line. Five styles are on offer, Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand, as digital files or a printed, optionally framed poster.
