The map
Fukagawa Map Poster & Print
Fukagawa sits in the Sorachi area of central Hokkaido, on the Ishikari River. From above, the town is a tight cluster of streets surrounded by very large, flat farmland. The river bends past the built-up area, and the surrounding plain is split into long rectangular paddies. That pattern reads as a fine, even texture once the map is reduced to black and white.
The town grew up as a farming settlement, and rice is still what defines it. Fields run right up to the edge of the houses, so the boundary between town and country shows up clearly on paper.
