Gagarin Map Poster & Print
Gagarin is a town in the east of Smolensk Oblast, on the Gzhat river. For most of its history it was called Gzhatsk, and in 1968 it was renamed in honour of Yuri Gagarin, the first human to travel into space, who was born in the nearby village of Klushino and spent part of his childhood in the town. His family home is now a museum.
On a map, the town is organised around the river, which winds through it in a series of bends, with the older centre on higher ground and residential streets extending in several directions. The Moscow to Minsk railway and highway pass nearby, giving the map strong straight lines that contrast with the curves of the Gzhat.
A Gagarin map poster combines a modest provincial plan with a name known worldwide. The centre shows a fairly regular street layout, typical of older Russian towns, while the edges dissolve into forest, fields and small villages. The river gives the composition its movement, and the name gives it a story.

Named for Yuri Gagarin
The town was renamed in 1968 after the cosmonaut, who was born in nearby Klushino and lived here as a child. His family house is a museum.
Rail and highway
The main route from Moscow toward Minsk passes near the town, drawing long straight lines across the map in contrast to the winding river.

Why Gagarin
A map that means something
Gagarin is a map for people with ties to Smolensk Oblast, and equally for anyone interested in the history of spaceflight. A poster of the town where the first cosmonaut grew up carries a quiet, specific meaning.
You can set a custom title and subtitle, add a date such as 12 April 1961, and edit the coordinates line. Choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand, as digital files or a printed poster.
