The river Erft threads through its centre, lined in places by narrow strips of green, while residential districts spread outward along the roads toward Neuss, Jüchen and Rommerskirchen. Lignite from the Rhenish mining district fed the power stations at Neurath and Frimmersdorf, and the vast Garzweiler open-cast pit lies just to the west.
