Guaduas sits in a valley on the western slopes of Cundinamarca, partway down from the Bogotá plateau toward the Magdalena River. For centuries it was a stopping point on the Camino Real linking the capital with the river port of Honda. The town still shows that role in its compact colonial core of regular blocks, with the main square at its heart.
Guaduas is widely known as the birthplace of Policarpa Salavarrieta, La Pola, a heroine of Colombia's independence whose name appears across the country.
