Gualaco sits in the Olancho Department of eastern Honduras, a region of broad valleys, cattle country and forested ranges. The municipality lies close to the Sierra de Agalta, one of the country's larger protected mountain areas, and the relief to the south shows on the map as a quieter, emptier zone.
