Guojia is in south-eastern Gansu, in the loess hill country that covers much of this part of north-western China. On a map the town follows a valley floor, with its streets arranged along the main road and a stream, while the land on either side rises into hills cut by gullies. The loess plateau is shaped by wind-blown soil that erodes easily, so the hills here are carved into ridges and ravines.
