Hải Dương lies in the heart of the Red River Delta, on the main corridor between Hanoi and the port of Hai Phong. The map is low and flat, and water is everywhere: rivers loop past the city, small lakes sit within the urban area, and irrigation channels divide the surrounding rice fields into a fine mesh of narrow plots.
For many years the city was the capital of its own province, and it is now part of the enlarged Hai Phong administrative area. Across Vietnam it is best known for bánh đậu xanh, the small mung bean cakes that travellers traditionally buy as a gift on the road between Hanoi and the coast.
