Hala lies in Matiari district in Sindh, on the plain east of the Indus River, north of Hyderabad. The town is well known across Pakistan for its crafts: glazed blue and white tiles and pottery, lacquered woodwork, and textiles such as ajrak and hand-woven cloth. It is also home to the shrine of the Sufi saint Makhdoom Nooh, which draws pilgrims throughout the year and gives the old town its main focus.
