The map
Hamhŭng Map Poster & Print
Hamhŭng lies on a coastal plain in the east of North Korea, a short distance inland from the East Sea. From above, the Songchon River is the defining line, running through the city toward the coast, with bridges tying the two banks together. Wide, straight avenues form the central grid, and to the southeast the urban area continues toward Hŭngnam, the industrial port district that has been merged into the city.
Much of the present layout comes from the reconstruction after the Korean War, when the city was rebuilt with help from East German planners and engineers in the 1950s and early 1960s. The region also has deep dynastic associations: it was the home ground of Yi Seong-gye, founder of the Joseon dynasty, and sites connected with his family remain in the area.

The centre was rebuilt after 1953 with wide, straight avenues and large blocks, a geometry that reads clearly in black and white and anchors the middle of the composition.
Hŭngnam district
Toward the coast the map extends into Hŭngnam, the port and chemical-industry district, where the fine street grid gives way to larger industrial parcels and rail lines.
