The map
Hirara Map Poster & Print
Hirara is the main town of Miyako Island in Okinawa Prefecture, far south-west of the Japanese main islands. It now forms the centre of Miyakojima City. From above, the town spreads along the island's west coast around its harbour. A mostly regular street grid fills the flat land behind the shore and extends into the sugarcane fields that cover much of the island.
Miyako is low and flat, with no rivers, so the map is defined by coastline and roads rather than hills or valleys. Just off the coast, the Irabu Bridge crosses the sea to Irabu Island in a long, gentle curve. It opened in 2015 and is one of the longest toll-free bridges in Japan.
A Hirara map poster sets the town against a sea full of reefs and small islands. Its street grid stands against the openness of the surrounding farmland, and the bridge draws a thin line across the water. It suits islanders and visitors alike.

Irabu Bridge
A long bridge arcs across the sea from Miyako to Irabu Island. On the map it is a single, graceful line over open water.
Flat island farmland
Beyond the town, the level island is divided into fields and straight rural roads. The resulting quiet pattern runs out to the coast.

Why Hirara
A map that means something
Miyako Island is remembered for clear water, reefs and slow days. A map of Hirara keeps that feeling in a simple graphic form, for islanders who have moved away or travellers who fell for the southern islands.
The title, subtitle and coordinates line can be written in Japanese or English and can include a name or a date. Choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand as the style.
