The land around it is mostly flat, broken here and there by low rocky hills, and dry for much of the year. From above, the town is a dense, irregular network of streets that thins out into fields and scattered settlements.
The town has a long tradition of handloom weaving, common across this part of Tamil Nadu, alongside agriculture and trade. It is also widely known as the home town of Edappadi K. Palaniswami, a former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, whose name comes from the town.
