The map
Iiyama Map Poster & Print
Iiyama lies in the far north of Nagano Prefecture. Here the Chikuma River flows through a long, narrow basin before it crosses into Niigata and becomes the Shinano. The town sits along the river's flat floodplain, with the mountains close on both sides. On a map this gives a long, narrow shape, with streets crowded between water and slope.
Iiyama is one of the snowiest inhabited places in Japan, and it is known for its temples. There are so many in the old town that locals call it the Little Kyoto of the snow country. The town is also known for Buddhist altar making and for Uchiyama washi paper. Since 2015 the Hokuriku Shinkansen has stopped at Iiyama station.
An Iiyama map poster shows the river line, the rail line and the town's old lanes. Along the western foothills, small temple grounds sit at the ends of short streets. Ski slopes on the surrounding mountains are just beyond the edge of the frame.

Temple lanes
Along the foot of the western hills, short lanes lead up to a series of temples. They form a fine, comb-like edge along the old town.
Shinkansen line
The Hokuriku Shinkansen crosses the basin on a long, straight track. This modern line cuts across the older, irregular pattern of streets.

Why Iiyama
A map that means something
Iiyama is a place people remember in winter: deep snow, quiet streets and temple roofs under white. A black-and-white map fits that memory, whether it is a ski trip or somewhere you grew up.
The title, subtitle and coordinates line are yours to edit, for example to add the Japanese name or a date. Choose from five styles. Paper and Noir suit the snow-country mood especially well.
