The map
Imatra Map Poster & Print
Imatra lies in South Karelia in eastern Finland, close to the border with Russia. The Vuoksi river flows out of Lake Saimaa, Finland's largest lake, and runs through the town before crossing the border. On the map, Imatra is a chain of districts spread along the river instead of a single centre, with forest and water between them.
The town is best known for Imatrankoski, a set of rapids that attracted visitors as early as the eighteenth century. Today the river is harnessed by a hydroelectric plant, and the rapids are released on a regular schedule in summer as a spectacle. Imatra also has the Church of the Three Crosses, designed by Alvar Aalto.
An Imatra map poster shows the Vuoksi as a strong line of water linking scattered neighbourhoods. The edges of Saimaa, the forest gaps between districts and the railway create a spacious composition. It is typical of Finnish towns, where landscape and settlement are interwoven.

Imatrankoski rapids
The historic rapids sit in a narrow gorge near the town centre. On the map they are a small but significant pinch in the river's course.
Lake Saimaa shores
The indented shoreline of Saimaa borders the town on the western side and adds bays, points and islands to the edge of the composition.
