Usiminas steelworks
The integrated steel plant fills a vast site beside the river. Its rail sidings, sheds and yards form a dense, rectilinear block that stands apart from the residential streets.

The map
Ipatinga Map Poster & Print
Ipatinga is the largest city of the Vale do Aço, the Steel Valley of eastern Minas Gerais. Industry shapes its layout on the map. The Usiminas steelworks covers a large area beside the river, and residential districts spread across the valley floor and the surrounding hills. The Piracicaba River runs along the city before joining the Rio Doce nearby, and it draws a clear edge along one side.
The modern city grew up around the steel plant from the late 1950s and became a municipality in 1964. The company planned many of its early neighbourhoods, arranging curving streets, schools and squares into self-contained districts. Ipatinga is also known for Parque Ipanema, one of the largest urban parks in Brazil, which runs as a long green strip through the middle of the city.
An Ipatinga map poster makes the relationship between work and home easy to see. The steelworks forms a large geometric block of tracks and buildings, the planned districts curl around it, and the park and rivers add open space. It is an unusual subject for a wall map. For anyone whose family history is tied to the valley, it is also a very personal one.

Company-planned districts
Neighbourhoods built for steelworkers from the 1960s onward follow curving streets and clear boundaries. On the map each district reads as its own small, organised town.
Parque Ipanema
A long green park crosses the city and leaves a broad open strip between the neighbourhoods on either side. It gives the dense centre of the map room to breathe.

Why Ipatinga
A map that means something
Ipatinga is a city of families who came for the steel industry and stayed. A map of its streets and the valley can mark where parents or grandparents worked or where a first home stood. It can also simply show where someone grew up in eastern Minas.
