The town is compact, with a small grid of streets, a central square and houses spreading out along the main road. Beyond the last blocks the land opens into caatinga, the thorny dry woodland of north-eastern Brazil.
The landscape around Irauçuba is well known to geologists for its inselbergs, the granite domes and hills that rise abruptly from the flat plain.
