The map
Jena Map Poster & Print
Jena lies in a deep section of the Saale valley in Thuringia. The river runs roughly north to south through the city, and the steep shell-limestone slopes on either side limit where streets can go. From above, Jena is long and narrow. The compact old town sits near the river, and the suburbs push up into side valleys wherever the terrain allows.
The city's name is tied to scholarship and optics. The university counted Schiller and Hegel among its teachers, and Goethe spent long periods here. In the nineteenth century, Carl Zeiss and Ernst Abbe made Jena a world centre of precision optics, and that industrial legacy still shapes large parts of the city.
The cylindrical JenTower, visible from almost everywhere, marks the centre. A Jena map poster captures the city's unusual form: a river corridor full of streets and rail lines, set between open, wooded hillsides that remain largely undeveloped.

Limestone slopes
Steep hillsides press in on both sides of the valley. They show on the map as broad, open areas where the street network suddenly stops.
Compact old town
The historic centre near the river is small and tightly knit. It is where the city's oldest university buildings sit among narrow streets.

Why Jena
A map that means something
Many people pass through Jena as students or researchers and end up remembering it as a formative place. A map of the Saale valley city is a fitting gift at graduation or a reminder of years spent between lectures and hillside walks.
You can personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line, for example with a graduation year or the name of an institute. Choose from five styles, including the technical-looking Blueprint and the warm Sand, in six print sizes up to 24×36 inches.
