The map
Joensuu Map Poster & Print
Joensuu means river mouth in Finnish, and the name matches the map. The Pielisjoki flows through the centre and into Lake Pyhäselkä, part of the wider Saimaa water system, and splits around small islands on the way. Ilosaari, one of those islands, gives its name to the Ilosaarirock festival held there every summer.
The town was founded in 1848 by decree of Tsar Nicholas I, when Finland was a grand duchy of the Russian Empire, and its centre still follows a planned rectangular grid. The market square sits at the heart of that grid. The University of Eastern Finland has a large campus here, and the student districts add a looser pattern just outside the core.
A Joensuu map poster is defined by water. The lake takes up a broad, empty edge of the frame, the river cuts a clean diagonal through the streets, and the bridges show where the two banks meet. Around it, suburbs thin out into forest and more lakes, typical of North Karelia.

1848 grid plan
The centre keeps the regular blocks laid out at its founding, a tidy rectangle of streets around the market square on the river's banks.
Lake Pyhäselkä shoreline
A wide stretch of open water borders the town to the south. On paper it forms a calm, empty field against the dense street grid.

Why Joensuu
A map that means something
Joensuu is often hung by former students of the university, by people from North Karelia, and by anyone who likes a map where water sets the shape. The river-and-grid composition is easy to read from across a room.
Add a personalised title, a subtitle such as a graduation year, and your own coordinates line. Pick from five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Blueprint makes the most of the lake and river.
