The map
Kalmar Map Poster & Print
Kalmar stands on the Swedish shore of the Kalmar Strait, facing the long island of Öland. Its centre occupies Kvarnholmen, a small island where the town was rebuilt in the seventeenth century on a regular grid of streets and blocks. Surrounded by water and the remains of its fortifications, the old town reads on the map as a neat, almost rectangular composition.
Just to the south, Kalmar Castle stands on its own islet, a reminder that this was once a key border fortress between Sweden and Denmark. In 1397 the Kalmar Union joined the three Scandinavian crowns here. The baroque cathedral, designed by Nicodemus Tessin the Elder, anchors the main square at the heart of the grid.
The most striking line on a Kalmar map poster is the Öland Bridge, which leaves the mainland north of the centre and crosses about six kilometres of open water. Add the harbour piers, the parkland around the castle and the curving shoreline, and the city becomes a balanced study of land, water and the structures that connect them.

Kalmar Castle
The castle stands on its own islet at the edge of the city park. With its moat it forms a compact, distinctive shape, surrounded by water and green space.
Öland Bridge
A single long line runs from the mainland across the Kalmar Strait to Öland, cutting through the open water on the poster and giving the design a clear horizontal accent.

Why Kalmar
A map that means something
Kalmar holds memories for students of Linnaeus University, for summer visitors on their way to Öland and for families rooted on the Småland coast. The mix of grid, water and bridge makes a graphic wall piece, even for people who have never been.
You can change the title, subtitle and coordinates line to mark a graduation year or a summer on the strait. Five styles are available: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. Try the free 900 px preview before buying the $9 HD files or a printed poster.
