Kamen lies on the eastern edge of the Ruhr, in the district of Unna, where the industrial belt starts to give way to farmland. The small Seseke river runs through the town, and the historic core sits close to its banks. It is a tight cluster of streets that grew up long before the coal era. Many German drivers know the town's name from the Kamener Kreuz, the junction just outside the centre where the A1 and A2 motorways meet.
