The map
Kanoya Map Poster & Print
Kanoya is the largest city on the Ōsumi Peninsula in Kagoshima Prefecture, on the eastern side of Kagoshima Bay. Much of its territory lies on raised plateaus of pale volcanic shirasu deposits, so the map shows a dense town in a river valley, with farmland and straight roads spreading over the flat uplands above and valleys cutting fine lines through them.
The city has a long connection with naval aviation. During the Second World War Kanoya was a major base for special attack flights, and the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force still operates an air base here, with a museum on its history. On a gentler note, the city is known for its large rose garden in Kirishimagaoka Park.
A Kanoya map poster reflects that plateau setting. The long straight runway, the grid of the town and the looser field roads on the uplands combine into a composition that is part city and part countryside, with the terrain showing through in the way streets stop at the edges of the plateau.

Plateau farmland
On the flat shirasu uplands, regular fields and straight roads create a calm, open grid that fills the outer parts of the map.
Valley town centre
The main streets gather in a river valley below the plateau, where the densest part of the city follows the lie of the land.
