The map
Kodaikānāl Map Poster & Print
Kodaikānāl sits at about two thousand metres in the Palani Hills of Tamil Nadu. Its map is centred on the lake. This star-shaped reservoir, created in the 1860s, has a road running all the way around its shore. From there, streets climb and curl along the ridges, and houses and schools are scattered among eucalyptus and pine.
The town was established as a hill station in the nineteenth century, when missionaries and colonial officials came here to escape the heat of the plains. The walks along the edge of the escarpment, the observatory and the boarding schools date from that time. The hills are also known for the kurinji flower, which blooms only once every twelve years.
A Kodaikānāl map poster is unusually graphic. The irregular lake sits at its centre, surrounded by loops of road and dense forest. The layout makes a strong focal point that works in any of the five styles.

Ridge roads
Streets follow the contours of the hills in long, looping curves. They connect viewpoints, schools and neighbourhoods across the slopes.
Escarpment edge
On one side, the plateau drops away sharply toward the plains. The street pattern comes to a clear stop there.
