Koelwār stands beside the Son River in Bihar's Bhojpur district, upstream of the point where the Son meets the Ganges. On a map the river dominates. The settlement forms a compact knot of lanes pressed against the approaches to the crossing.
The town is best known for the Koilwar Bridge, a long rail-and-road crossing opened in 1862 and one of the oldest major bridges in India.
