It sits on the broad, flat Ōsaki plain, one of the main rice-growing areas of the Tōhoku region. From above, the town is a compact cluster of streets surrounded on every side by the fine rectangular pattern of paddy fields.
Kogota is known as a railway junction. The Tōhoku Main Line, the Rikuu East Line and the Ishinomaki Line meet at its station, so the tracks fan out in several directions. On a map these lines are the most obvious structure, running through the settlement and away across the fields.
