Komatsu Airport
The airport's long runway is a strong straight line near the coast, one of the most recognisable shapes on the map and a clear break from the street pattern.

The map
Komatsu Map Poster & Print
Komatsu lies on the flat coastal plain of Ishikawa Prefecture, south-west of Kanazawa, with the Sea of Japan on one side and the foothills of the Hakusan range on the other. From above the city is fairly flat and regular. Rivers run down to the coast, and residential streets fill the space between them.
The city gave its name to Komatsu Ltd, the construction machinery maker that was founded here and remains closely linked to the area. It is also home to Komatsu Airport, which is shared with an air self-defence base. In 2024 the Hokuriku Shinkansen was extended to the city, bringing it onto Japan's high-speed rail network.
A Komatsu map poster brings out several strong shapes. The long straight runway lies near the coast, Lake Kiba forms a calm oval of open water to the south-west, and the Kakehashi river crosses the plain. The city's fine street grid holds these shapes together into a balanced composition.

Lake Kiba
A shallow lake on the south-western side of the city leaves a smooth, open area on the map, with roads and settlements tracing its shoreline.
Kakehashi river
The river crosses the plain toward the Sea of Japan, carrying bridges and dividing the city's districts as it approaches the coast.
