The map
Kommunar Map Poster & Print
Kommunar is in Gatchina district, south of St Petersburg, on the Izhora river. It grew up around a paper mill, which still operates, and the river was dammed to create a long pond that is now the town's main natural feature. From above, the water forms a soft, elongated shape running through the centre.
The town's layout mixes older areas near the mill with Soviet-era residential blocks and newer housing developments. Kommunar was granted town status only in the late twentieth century. Roads connect it to Gatchina, Pavlovsk and St Petersburg, and farmland and small villages surround it.
A Kommunar map poster shows a compact industrial town arranged around water. The mill complex, the pond and the regular blocks of housing make a clear, balanced composition. It captures an ordinary place with a strong sense of home for the people who live there.

Soviet-era and newer housing is laid out in regular groups on either side of the river. It gives the map an orderly, planned texture.
