The map
Krasnokamensk Map Poster & Print
Krasnokamensk is in Zabaykalsky Krai, in the far south-east of Siberia, not far from Russia's borders with China and Mongolia. It was founded in the late 1960s as a planned town to serve the uranium mines and the processing plant nearby. The surrounding landscape is open steppe with low hills and very few trees.
As a planned Soviet town, Krasnokamensk has a very clear structure on the map. Residential districts made up of apartment blocks are arranged in regular groups, main avenues run between them, and industrial areas and quarries are set further away. The town is also known for its prison colony, where Mikhail Khodorkovsky served part of his sentence.
A Krasnokamensk map poster shows an unusually clear design. The residential blocks form a compact, ordered shape, the roads out of town go straight across the steppe, and the mines and industrial sites appear as large, geometric forms on the edges. All around, the empty space of the steppe gives the town a strong sense of isolation.

Mining landscape
Mines, quarries and industrial sites outside the town appear as large, angular shapes, very different from the residential pattern.
Open steppe
Around the town, the steppe is almost empty on the map. Straight roads cross it, emphasising how compact and isolated the town is.
