The map
Lecce Map Poster & Print
Lecce is the principal city of the Salento peninsula in the heel of Italy. Its historic centre forms a rough oval, once enclosed by walls and now encircled by wide tree-lined avenues. Inside, the streets are irregular and tightly knit, opening suddenly onto squares and church forecourts before closing again into alleys.
The city is known for its Baroque architecture, carved from the soft local limestone called pietra leccese, and is sometimes called the Florence of the South. The Basilica di Santa Croce and the cathedral square are among its best-known sights, while in Piazza Sant'Oronzo part of a Roman amphitheatre lies exposed below street level.
A Lecce map poster shows the contrast between that dense core and the more regular neighbourhoods built around it. Historic gates such as Porta Napoli mark where old roads leave the centre. Beyond the ring, the grid loosens and roads head out across flat countryside toward the Adriatic shore.

Roman amphitheatre
In Piazza Sant'Oronzo the curved outline of the partly excavated amphitheatre appears in the heart of the city, an ancient shape among later streets.
Castle of Charles V
The sixteenth-century fortress sits at the edge of the old town, its angular bastions visible as a solid geometric form on the map.
