The map
Lens Map Poster & Print
Lens is in the Pas-de-Calais department, at the centre of the former coal basin of northern France. The mining era still shapes the map. Colonies of miners' housing, the cités minières, form small, regular grids among the town's streets. Railway lines that once served the pits curve through the area, and to the west the twin slag heaps of Loos-en-Gohelle rise.
The city was almost completely destroyed during the First World War and rebuilt afterward, so much of the centre dates from the reconstruction era. In 2012 the Louvre-Lens opened on a former pit site. Its long, low building sits in a park that stands out as a large open space on the map.
A Lens map poster also includes the Stade Bollaert-Delelis, home of RC Lens and famous for its passionate supporters. From the stadium to the mining terraces and the museum site, the map tells a story of work, loss and renewal in a precise, orderly way.

Louvre-Lens
The museum's low glass-and-aluminium buildings lie on a former colliery site. On the map, the site appears as a calm, open parkland area near the centre.
Stade Bollaert-Delelis
RC Lens's stadium is a clear rectangle within the streets. For many supporters, it is the most important point on any map of the city.
